Models Available

Each Highland Hornpipe is made of high quality black acrylic with a brushed aluminum bell. A sterling silver ferrule bearing a Celtic design adds a finishing highlight.

Each instrument comes reeded and ready to play and includes reed, ligature, mouthpiece, cap, reed holder and playing and maintenance instructions. Cases, which are custom fitted, are highly recommended. In addition, swabs, mouthpiece upgrades and spare reeds are available to fully equip your instrument.

There are four models of the Highland Hornpipe. Each plays an octave lower than its Highland bagpipe counterpart and can be played by itself or along with other instruments. All models have the same scale and fingering as the bagpipe and practice chanter. The only difference is that each plays in a different key. This means that "A", the starting note of the scale, sounds at a different pitch on each model. The rest of the scale follows normally according to this "key note". All of this only really matters if you want to match musical keys with a specifiic instrument(s) see below. Except for The Pipe Major, all models are tuned to modern equal temperament.

The Sessioneer in 'A' 440 Hz
Can be played in session situations along with other instruments such as fiddles, flutes, accordions, smallpipes and border-pipes.
The Wee Dee in 'D' concert pitch (shorter than the other models)
A very different sound from the other three models: lively and exciting! The Dee can also be played in sessions. Useful for Scottish fiddle tunes in 'D' such as 'Rattlin' Roarin' Willie' and many Irish tunes such as 'The Hag at the Churn.'
The Pipe Major in standard ‘bagpipe B flat’ 475 Hz
Can be played along with the Great Highland bagpipe for a whole new sound. N.B. This model retains the same tuning and unique intervals of the Highland bagpipe and, as such, may not correspond to those on other instruments.
The Tattoo in 'B flat' concert pitch 466 Hz
Can be played along with brass band, saxophones, clarinets, piano and any other instrument capable of playing in B flat.
Cases
Custom-fitted hard-shell silver polyethylene case with handle, lockable lid and foam padding, top and bottom. Enough room for flutes and low whistles too!
